Urban Tales Script

SCRIPT
(Voiceover while these three scenes appear)
People say life’s a bitch, but I think people made it that way. I heard that the meaning of life is to be happy and useful, but I feel neither. I look around me and no one is actually happy so I think it’s safe to say that in life everything has been figured out, except for one thing. How to live it.
(Low fast music in the background)

Fast cut scenes of conventions of urban realism:

LS & LA – A group of teenagers huddled together at 1:00 am in the morning outside.

MS – Two boys are exchanging money and drugs.

Panning – An intimate scene of a girl and boy leaning against the wall.

EXT. – Harrow Road, London, NW10, UK – A cold day on March.

LS – Jamal is walking as he’s talking on the phone and then it pauses as a still of Jamal.

Nadia
(Voiceover)
This is Jamal. He’s my boyfriend. All the boys want to be like him, they all think they know him. But the truth is he don’t even know who he is – a pussycat inside.

CS – Jamal is talking on the phone with a look of annoyance however arrogance too. He keeps looking from side to side, perhaps wondering if anyone can see him.

Jamal
(Talking to the person on the line)
Yeah yeah man, I’ll fix you up with that stuff in no time, don’t watch fam, you get me.

MS – As Jamal continues the conversation on the phone, he puts the phone to his shoulder and gives a face of agony and lip signs (oh my God!) He then returns the phone to his ear and resumes listening to the person on the line.

Jamal
(annoyed)

Alright man cool, I said I’ll set you up, yeah cool safe.

MS – Tanisha is sitting on a table at school with her friends and starts to pick on a girl that walks past, perhaps from a feeling of insecurity about her self.

Tanisha
(Disgustingly)

Err man, look at her shoes!

(Tanisha’s friend)

Ugly!

MS – A still shot of Tanisha and her friend.

Nadia
(Voiceover)

This is Tanisha. She’s my best friend. All the girls want to be like her. She comes across as a bit of a wastegash and she always wants to be the boss.

EXT. – Outside Nadia’s house, Harrow Road, NW10, UK – A cold day on March.

ES – Nadia closes the door and walks up the path of the house on to the road and goes around to the corner hurriedly. She takes off her scarf rapidly and shoves it in her school bag and answers the phone.

Nadia
(Looks confident now.)
Hello... yeah...I’ll be there.
